Julian Reese propels No.11 Maryland past Northwestern

In his final home game, Julian Reese collected 19 points and 11 rebounds to propel No. 11 Maryland to a 74-61 victory over Northwestern, Saturday in College Park, Md.Ja’Kobi Gillespie scored 17 points and Derik Queen added 10 points and 10 rebounds as the Terrapins (24-7, 14-6 Big Ten) won for the seventh time in their last eight games.Rodney Rice and Selton Miguel, who also was honored on Senior Day, delivered 11 points apiece for Maryland, which avenged an earlier overtime defeat at Northwestern.The Terrapins overwhelmed the Wildcats on the boards, 45-23, which helped them overcome 18 turnovers.With the win, the Terrapins clinched a double-bye in next week’s Big Ten tournament. They will open Friday in the quarterfinal round.Nick Martinelli produced 28 points and seven rebounds for Northwestern (16-15, 7-13), which plays Wednesday in the opening round of the conference tournament.Ty Berry scored 10 points for the Wildcats, who hit 36.4 percent of their shots, including 4 of 19 (21.1 percent) from 3-point range.Maryland answered with 42.3 percent shooting from the floor and 7-of-16 (43.8 percent) accuracy from deep.Early in the game, Martinelli scored six of the points in an 11-2 run which gave Northwestern a 13-8 lead. A 3-pointer by Martinelli gave the Wildcats their biggest lead of the game, 19-12.
